Our cacao farmer

This is Sahji, our cacao farmer.

He and his father own a 6 acres cacao farm in the mountains of the Wayanad region. Cacao first was introduced by the British in India in 1798 with Criollo beans, but actually it became a serious agricultural activity in the 1960’s when the big chocolate companies sourced the best cacao beans in the world, so they thought and introduced local farmers to produce Peruvian cacao beans. Although, most farmers today have swapped to hybrid beans because they produce larger amounts of cacao, Sahji and his father still use this earlier top quality beans from Peru in his mix culture plantation. They alternate cacao plants with different spice and a variety of all kinds of fruit and dry fruit plants.
